The athletic journey of Stewart: inspiring as a coach and cyclist

Stewart Crowe, a dedicated swimming coach and avid cyclist from the UK, faced a life-changing diagnosis in 2019 when he was diagnosed with recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, his passion for sports and determination to overcome challenges has led him to achieve remarkable milestones, both as an athlete and a mentor.

Stewart’s journey in sports began long before his bladder cancer diagnosis. He has coached age group swimmers to national events and guided master swimmers to set British, European, and world records.

In 2019, at the age of 72, Stewart was training for the London to Brighton cycle ride when he received the news of his bladder cancer diagnosis. Undeterred, he continued his training and completed the 54-mile ride just eight weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor. Although he narrowly missed his goal of finishing in under four hours, this achievement was nothing short of inspirational.

Stewart shares a powerful message for fellow bladder cancer patients:

«Keeping fit helps with the journey. Sporting activity takes the mind away from the 'what ifs.' Sport of any description helps a person to be more logical, work through the bad times, knowing that by keeping to the training program, the good times will arrive.

This September, Stewart will embark on the London to Brighton cycle ride once again, joined by his two sons-in-law, to raise funds for Fight Bladder Cancer and Prostate Cancer UK. His blog, documenting his cancer journey, serves as a source of inspiration for many. Read Stewart’s blog here.
