WBCPC presents at European Cancer Summit 2023

The European Cancer Summit, organised by the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) took place through November 15-16, 2023 in Brussels, Belgium, and brought together leading oncology experts, experienced patient advocates, key opinion leaders, policymakers, and politicians to discuss key issues in reducing the burden of cancer, saving, and improving the lives of patients and the public.

The World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition Executive Director, Alex Filicevas, joined the engaging panel discussion alongside other young cancer professionals titled “The Next Generation of Cancer Leaders”.  He highlighted the significance of incorporating patient perspectives in steering the trajectory of cancer care initiatives and policies. His presentation shed light on the vital role cancer patients and cancer survivors play in influencing positive changes within the landscape of cancer care.

Speaking of the importance of supporting education and growth of cancer patient advocates, Alex highlighted initiatives such as EUPATI and WECAN as leading examples of patient empowerment. He presented Start-up guide for bladder cancer patient groups, as one of the initiatives of the WBCPC to support the establishment and growth of bladder cancer patient groups around the world.

«Cancer patients and cancer survivors are our future cancer leaders. Their voices are the most important ones when we look at making changes in cancer policies and the future of cancer care.

Alex Filicevas, Executive Director, World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition

Noting the WBCPC Bladder Cancer Patient & Carer Survey results, which showed that 73% of respondents were not guided to a patient group or charity, despite living in the countries where these groups exist, Alex stressed the importance for young cancer professionals to engage with cancer patient organisations early on, and build the relationships and partnerships which can help them deliver better care and support to people affected by cancer.

We would like to thank all cancer patient advocates and professionals for contributing their expertise and insights during the Summit. All of their collective efforts contribute immensely to advancing the discourse on cancer care and policy.
