Empowering patient groups: new online community guide released

Setting up a bladder cancer patient group is a journey with many steps, and connecting with people can make all the difference. Our new guide, “Creating an online community” is designed to help you build a welcoming and supportive space. Whether you are just starting or looking to grow, this guide offers practical advice, tools and shared experiences from established communities.

A step‑by‑step approach

The guide walks you through creating a group from scratch. It explains how to:

  • Choose the right platform. Facebook is often used for its community features, but WhatsApp, WeChat or local platforms may be better suited to your audience.
  • Introduce the group clearly. Write a friendly description that explains who the group is for and what members can expect.
  • Create joining questions. A couple of simple questions help ensure that everyone joining has a connection to bladder cancer.
  • Pick a clear, searchable name. Including “bladder cancer” and using local languages makes it easy for people to find you.
  • Add your branding. A logo and welcoming cover image help your group look professional and inviting.
  • Post a welcome message and set privacy. A pinned post explains the purpose and rules, and a private setting keeps conversations confidential.
Moderation and growth

A positive atmosphere does not happen by accident. The guide recommends:

  • Recruiting one or two trusted volunteers to review new member requests and keep discussions respectful.
  • Screening members through your joining questions and removing spam or inappropriate content quickly.
  • Encouraging conversation with open‑ended questions, sharing useful articles and celebrating milestones like treatment anniversaries or the group reaching a new size.
  • Being visible and approachable so members know who the moderators are and feel comfortable reaching out.
  • Listening to your members and adapting posts and events to meet their needs.
Case studies from around the world

To inspire you, the guide shares two success stories:

  • United Kingdom: Fight Bladder Cancer’s Support Forum started with 40 members and now has almost 5 000. Its success comes from consistent moderation, a clear purpose and the kindness and understanding of its members.
  • Spain: CANVES created a private Facebook group and promoted it through doctors and patient advocates. This mix of medical endorsement and peer connection helped the group grow quickly and build trust.
Why this matters

«We have been working to bring the community together and empower bladder cancer patient voices as we raise awareness worldwide. This guide is another step towards that goal, helping patient organisations create spaces where people can connect, feel understood and find support.

Alex Filicevas, Executive Director of the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition

In addition to this guide, we have developed a comprehensive resource on how to raise funds for your patient group, packed with practical advice and inspiring examples. We encourage you to explore both guides and to share your stories with us at info@worldbladdercancer.org.
