Fight Bladder Cancer study on patient support recognised at EAU25
This week at the European Association of Urology Congress 2025 (EAU25), patient advocacy took centre stage as Melanie Costin, Interim CEO of Fight Bladder Cancer UK presented her award-winning research during the EAU Patient Day session dedicated to patient-led research posters.
Melanie’s ePoster, titled “Patient Advocacy Group Resources Improve Confidence in Managing Diagnosis”, highlights how Fight Bladder Cancer’s resources, including an online forum, patient and carer information booklets, and an educational website, have been instrumental in enhancing patient knowledge, emotional well-being, and engagement with healthcare professionals.
«This research highlights the power of advocacy and peer support in the bladder cancer journey. Equipping patients with high-quality resources and a strong community can make a real difference in their confidence and well-being.

Key findings from the study:
- 96.7% of respondents would recommend Fight Bladder Cancer’s website to newly diagnosed patients.
- 72% of patients reported feeling less alone after using the online forum.
- 69.7% felt more confident managing their diagnosis after reading patient and carer booklets.
Despite these positive outcomes, the research also highlights ongoing challenges in patient-provider communication, with some patients still struggling to ensure that their concerns are fully understood by healthcare professionals. The findings reinforce the need for enhanced patient support and health literacy efforts.
