Cancer in Africa: WBCPC Joins the AORTIC 2025 International Cancer Conference in Tunisia

The World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition took part in the 15th AORTIC International Conference on Cancer in Africa, held on November 2-5, 2025 in Hammamet, Tunisia. Organised by the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), the event brought together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and patient advocates from across the continent and beyond.

This year’s theme, “Advancing Cancer Care Across Africa: Equity Through Empowering Research & Education ”, set the tone for powerful conversations on strengthening cancer control across Africa.

As a global coalition, the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition is committed to deepening its understanding of bladder cancer impact in Africa. Joining AORTIC 2025 provided an important opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with those working on the frontlines of cancer care.

This year, our delegation was represented by WBCPC President Lori Cirefice, Executive Director Alex Filicevas and Board Member Lauren Pretorius, who engaged widely with experts, organisations, and community leaders across the region. Their participation focused on building relationships, gaining insight into the challenges affecting bladder cancer awareness and diagnosis, and exploring how WBCPC can better support partners in countries with rising disease burden.

Throughout the congress, Lori, Alex and Lauren joined sessions on early detection, patient-centred care, health system strengthening, and research collaboration, all key factors influencing bladder cancer outcomes. They also connected with local and regional organisations to hear first-hand about the realities faced by patients across African health systems, where symptom misinterpretation, late diagnosis, and limited access to specialised treatment remain significant barriers.

AORTIC’s commitment to transforming cancer control in Africa through education, research, and equitable access to care strongly aligns with WBCPC’s mission. By participating in this congress, our coalition continues to build the knowledge and relationships needed to support bladder cancer patients worldwide ensuring that no one faces this disease alone, regardless of where they live.
