EAU25: Building trust in the patient-doctor relationship – key takeaways
Trust is one of the most important elements in healthcare and also one of the most fragile. At EAU Congress 2025, the first-ever EAU Patient Plaza Theatre hosted patient-led sessions, which included WBCPC session on Building Trust in the Patient-Doctor Relationship brought together patients, advocates, and clinicians to explore how to strengthen communication and connection in cancer care.
The discussion highlighted that trust isn’t automatic. it must be built through empathy, consistency, and clear communication. When patients feel rushed, dismissed, or confused by medical language, it can quickly lead to frustration and fear. The speakers shared personal stories and practical solutions to help rebuild that trust.
One key message was the importance of explaining medical terms clearly. Words like “palliative” or “radical” are often misunderstood by patients. Taking a moment to explain what these treatments mean and what they do not can make a big difference. It helps patients feel more confident and involved in decisions about their care.
The emotional aspect of the patient experience was also discussed. Losing a trusted doctor, not understanding or being offered all possible treatment options, or feeling simply just a number in a busy clinic can all impact how safe and supported patients feel. On the other hand, small gestures, like asking about life goals or encouraging questions can go a long way in making patients feel seen and heard.
Time was another important theme. While consultations are often short, the panel emphasised that quality matters more than quantity. Creating space for open dialogue, even during a short visit, can help build stronger relationships and improve care outcomes.
The session ended with a reminder: trust is at the heart of every positive healthcare experience. By focusing on communication, empathy, and listening, healthcare teams can support patients more effectively and build lasting, meaningful relationships that will positively affect patient experience with their care and likely broader treatment outcomes too.
