Urology Week 2025: Raising Awareness of Urinary Tract Infections

Urology Week 2025 is a European initiative by the European Association of Urology (EAU), running from September 22–26, 2025, and this year focusing on urinary tract infections (UTIs).

UTIs are among the most common infections worldwide, affecting millions of people every year and disproportionately impacting women. They can cause pain, discomfort, urgency, and frequent urination – symptoms that overlap with those experienced by many people with bladder cancer. For bladder cancer patients, urinary infections are not only common but can also complicate treatment, add to the physical burden of the disease, and increase feelings of distress.

Our Global Bladder Cancer Patient & Carer Experience Survey has shown that the majority of bladder cancer patients report urinary symptoms, with many experiencing repeated infections. These can result from cancer itself or as side effects of treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy. Recognising and addressing these symptoms early is essential to avoid delays in care and to support patients in their daily lives.

At the same time, antibiotic resistance makes managing UTIs increasingly challenging. Misconceptions about treatment and prevention add to the problem, with many people still unaware of the importance of medical guidance and healthy practices such as drinking enough water and following good hygiene.

This year’s Urology Week campaign reminds us of the importance of open conversations about urinary health. For people living with bladder cancer, tackling the stigma around urinary problems and increasing awareness about UTIs is an important step toward better care and improved quality of life.
