European Week Against Cancer – strengthening action on cancer awareness and prevention
Each year, from 25 to 31 May, the European cancer community comes together to mark European Week Against Cancer (EWAC), an important moment to renew our commitment to cancer prevention, early detection, and better support for all those affected by cancer.
At the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition (WBCPC), we are proud to join this collective call to action. We stand alongside organisations across Europe to highlight the importance of sustained efforts in awareness, education, and innovation in cancer care.
The EWAC campaign, led by the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), shines a spotlight on the European Code Against Cancer and the steps individuals and communities can take to reduce their cancer risk. It also underscores the essential role of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, a framework that continues to shape the future of cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship across the region.
Bladder cancer remains the fifth most common cancer in Europe, with more than 120,000 people diagnosed each year across the European Union. Despite its prevalence, bladder cancer often remains overlooked. Awareness of its symptoms and risk factors is still low, contributing to delays in diagnosis and treatment. High recurrence rates, complex care pathways, and persistent inequalities in access to quality care make the need for action even more urgent.
At WBCPC, we know that improving early detection and supporting risk reduction strategies must be central to our collective efforts. Tobacco control, occupational exposure prevention, public education about symptoms such as blood in the urine, and stronger healthcare systems are all key parts of the solution.
As we mark European Week Against Cancer, we echo the call for coordinated efforts across governments, healthcare providers, patient organisations, and individuals. Together, we must ensure that the goals of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan are fully realised, delivering meaningful change for people living with and beyond cancer.
