WBCPC Presents at ASCO GU 2026 in San Francisco
The World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition (WBCPC) took part in the 2026 edition of the ASCO Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, held in San Francisco from February 27–29, 2026. This international meeting brings together clinicians, researchers and organisations working in genitourinary (GU) cancers, including bladder cancer, to share the latest scientific developments and clinical updates.
This year, our Executive Director, Alex Filicevas, presented a poster titled: “Fostering Inclusive Language in Genitourinary Cancer Research” during the Prostate Cancer and Urothelial Carcinoma session.
The poster addresses an important question: bladder cancer research is advancing but are we making it accessible enough for patients?
The project presented at ASCO GU focuses on developing a plain language lexicon for bladder cancer and prostate cancer. In total, 146 commonly used medical terms were reviewed and refined through collaboration between patients, patient advocates, clinicians and researchers. The objective was to explain complex medical terms in clearer language without losing scientific accuracy. These lexicons were developed together with Johnson & Johsnon, World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition and Prostate Health Education Network.
For people living with bladder cancer, understanding medical terminology is not a minor issue. Words such as “radical cystectomy”, “intravesical therapy” or “surveillance” directly affect how patients understand their diagnosis, evaluate treatment options and take part in decisions about their care. When language is unclear, patients may feel confused or excluded from important conversations. When explanations are clear, patients are better prepared to ask questions and engage in shared decision-making.
«Ensuring that scientific and medical terms are easy to understand and interpet is not about simplifying science. It is about putting people affected by bladder cancer first so can meaningfully engage in decisions about their own care and where relevant participate in research.
Alex Filicevas, Executive Director of the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition
WBCPC was also represented at ASCO GU by WBCPC Vice President, Michelle Colero. Being present at international scientific congresses such as ASCO GU is an important part of our work. It allows us to:
- Bring the patient perspective into global research discussions
- Connect with clinicians, researchers and partners
- Strengthen collaboration across the bladder cancer community
This marks WBCPC’s second participation at ASCO GU. At the previous edition, we presented a poster highlighting findings from our Global Bladder Cancer Patient and Carer Survey. You can read more about our earlier participation here.
WBCPC participation at ASCO GU 2026 reflects our continued commitment to health literacy, patient-centred communication and inclusive research. Scientific progress has the greatest impact when patients can fully understand and engage with it.
