Bringing bladder cancer to the forefront: Our Bladder Cancer Awareness Month 2024 Report

Each May, we come together as a global community to shine a light on bladder cancer. Bladder Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an opportunity to increase understanding of a disease that remains too often overlooked. With 1.9 million people living with bladder cancer and over 600,000 diagnosed each year, awareness and early detection are critical.

A campaign rooted in action

Building on the momentum of previous years, our “Feeling Unsure? Get Checked” campaign continued to challenge the misinterpretation of symptoms, urging people to look again and re-evaluate what they see. The Unsure Icona symbol combining a drop of blood, the outline of a bladder, and a stopwatch – remained central to our campaign, reinforcing the urgency of early diagnosis.

This year, we introduced ‘Spot the Drop’, an interactive game designed to engage audiences in a new way. Available in 12 languages, the game encouraged players to react quickly to visual cues, reinforcing the link between seeing blood in urine and seeking medical advice. With over 52,000 people participating, it proved to be an innovative and impactful tool for raising awareness.

Expanding our reach

The impact of BCAM 2024 was felt across the world:
✔️ 11 million+ people reached through social media
✔️ 105,000+ website visits, reflecting growing global interest
✔️ 100,000+ social media interactions, sparking meaningful conversations
✔️ 4,000+ uses of #BladderCancerMonth24, #SpotTheDrop, and #UnsureIcon

To further drive engagement, we provided custom campaign resources in 12 languages, helping local organisations amplify awareness in their communities. A dedicated social media kit, healthcare posters, and an animated video played a key role in making bladder cancer a visible, global conversation.

Strengthening advocacy worldwide

Our commitment to empowering local patient groups continued with the Bladder Cancer Awareness Month Grant Grants. In 2024, we awarded grants to organisations in Argentina, Malawi, Ghana, and Nigeria, supporting impactful initiatives that reached thousands through screenings, community workshops, media campaigns, and advocacy events.

Bladder cancer patient groups are at the heart of change. Through their work, we are ensuring that awareness, support, and advocacy extend to every corner of the world.

Looking ahead

Bladder cancer awareness does not stop in May. Every conversation, every shared resource, and every moment of advocacy contributes to a future where no one faces this disease alone.
