Celebrating Carers this International Caregiver Day
On November 26, 2024, the world marks the International Caregiver Day by appreciating the important contributions of carers around the world, especially those supporting people affected by bladder cancer.
Bladder cancer, the 9th most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, affects not only patients but also their families and friends. Carers, often close family members or friends, play an essential role in providing practical assistance and emotional support throughout the cancer journey.
Our Bladder Cancer Patient & Carer Experience Survey continues to highlight the challenges of caregiving. Nearly half (49%) of respondents noted that providing emotional support is the most difficult aspect of their role.
Carers often face emotional stress, including fears of potential cancer relapse (65%), personal distress (60%), and prioritising their loved one’s needs over their own (55%). To better understand these experiences, we encourage you to read our latest report from the Bladder Cancer Patient & Carer Experience Survey results.
If you are currently caring for someone with bladder cancer, or have done so in the past, you might find it helpful to connect with others who share similar experiences. Starting a local bladder cancer patient or support group can help build a sense of community and support.
We’ve developed a Start-up Guide available in multiple languages to help you initiate local support initiatives. This guide includes practical tips and inspiring stories from bladder cancer organisations globally.
Additionally, some of our member organisations have created specific resources for carers, including the Bladder Cancer Canada Caregivers Handbook and the Fight Bladder Cancer Carers’ A to Z Guide.
