European Cancer Summit 2025: Connecting policy, equity and innovation for better cancer outcomes
The World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition took part in the European Cancer Summit 2025 organised by European Cancer Organisation, held on November 19-20 in Brussels. Bringing together policymakers, clinicians, researchers, industry representatives, and patient advocates, the summit focused on how cancer care must adapt in an uncertain political and economic environment.
This year’s theme, “Cancer in a Changing Global Landscape: Challenges and Commitments”, highlighted the importance of unity, innovation, and wise investment to protect progress in cancer care. The opening keynote from Olivér Várhelyi, the European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, set a strong direction, emphasising prevention, early detection, and the role of a skilled workforce in delivering quality care.
«Early detection saves lives, but quality care is only possible when supported by a strong, skilled workforce and equitable access for all patients across Europe.
Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare
Themes throughout the summit reflected many of the challenges seen in bladder cancer, particularly around inequalities, timely diagnosis, and access to support. These issues echo findings from the Global Patient and Carer Experience Survey, where 57% of respondents were first diagnosed with another condition, and more than half reported not receiving enough emotional or informational support to cope with their diagnosis. These experiences underline the importance of placing patient needs at the centre of future cancer policy and system improvements.
WBCPC’s presence at the summit helped bring visibility to bladder cancer within wider discussions on prevention, diagnosis, and quality of life. By connecting with stakeholders and listening to emerging policy priorities, we reinforced our commitment to supporting a more patient-centred and inclusive approach to cancer care across Europe.
